2016 Nominee – Jake PeavyJake Peavy
Team: San Francisco Giants
Throughout his 14‐year Major League Baseball career, San Francisco Giants Pitcher Jake Peavy has supported our nation’s military service men and women and their families. Jake has been a loyal supporter of Strikeouts for Troops, Barry Zito’s foundation, which has provided baseball experiences and financial assistance to military personnel and their families. Jake has welcomed many military members and their families to the park and shared with them his two passions – baseball and music. He has the ability to bring a smile to anyone’s face and make them feel like a longtime friend through his charisma and genuine care for people.
Through his own foundation, the Jake Peavy Foundation, he has continued the legacy of Zito’s Strikeouts for Troops, by creating Hero Jam. Hero Jam, held in Scottsdale during Spring Training, is a concert that is led by Jake and his band to benefit the USO and the Transition 360 Alliance, a program that helps U.S. military personnel and their families transition into civilian life after their service ends. In addition to providing the gift of music to our troops, Jake also encouraged his teammates to help him assemble welcome‐home bags for service men and women returning home from deployment.
During the 2016 season, Jake will continue his support of veteran organizations, such as Swords to Plowshares, which provides needs assessment and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to military veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Jake’s enthusiasm for bettering his community is contagious and his excitement and passion for serving and assisting those in need, especially those who have served our country, is an inspiration.
