Thank you to the National Baseball Hall of Fame for the opportunity to be part of a great day at Doubleday Field this past Saturday, July 20th! Act of Valor President Peter Fertig, Retired Command Sergeant Major and Education Committee Chair Steve Curtis and USMC Gunnery Sergeant and 2018 Jerry Coleman Award winner John Rose spoke about Bob Feller and the 37 members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame to serve during World War II. The 17 year old Bob Feller’s first official major league appearance came on July 19th in the eighth inning of a game against the Washington Senators in Griffith Stadium that the Indians were losing 9-2. Feller plunked the first batter, Red Kress, in the ribs with a wild curveball. Then, throwing only fastballs, Feller retired the side around two walks on a strikeout and two popups to end his one inning of work.

Congratulations to New York Mets rookie Pete Alonso for winning the 2019 home run derby this week! Pete is donating part of his earnings to the Wounded Warrior Project and Tunnel To Towers. The Wounded Warrior Project honors and empowers wounded warriors. Tunnel To Towers honors military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.
American Valor Podcast During MLB All-Star Week: Merchant Marine Academy Pitching Coach, Act of Valor Award Foundation Board Member Lou Bernardi
During MLB All-Star week, we are excited to release our fifth episode of the American Valor podcast, where we talk to Mr. Lou Bernardi, Pitching Coach of the Merchant Marine Academy baseball program and Baseball Committee Chair of the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation. We talk about Lou’s career as a baseball player and coach, definition of valor and the strides he is making within the baseball community and beyond.
Congratulations to 2015 Act of Valor Award nominee Trevor Bauer. Trevor pitched seven one run innings, striking out nine in the Indians 11-1 win. Trevor also acquired his second career hit in the inter-league game. Mr. Bauer supports Luttrell’s Lone Survivor Foundation, dedicated to providing education, rehabilitation, recovery and wellness opportunities to members of the U.S. armed forces and their families.

The Act of Valor Player of the Night is Ian Kennedy! Ian earned his sixth save in the Royals 7-3 home win. Mr. Kennedy has been nominated for the Act of Valor Award as he and his wife Allison have hosted community groups, including eight that support the military, in a suite to enjoy the game as well as early batting practice. The Kennedys have also supported Folds of Honor, Honor Flight Network of KC, SAFE and the USO.
Congratulations to Cole Hamels for pitching seven shutout innings of six hit, one walk, nine strikeout baseball, lowering his ERA to 2.98 and improving to 6-2. The Cubs won 10-1, and currently lead the NL Wild Card race. The Hamels Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives of children through the power of education by giving them the tools they need to achieve their goals.
