The American Valor Podcast team was recently honored to converse with retired MLB pitcher Mr. Brad Ziegler and the head baseball coach of the United States Naval Academy baseball program Mr. Paul Kostacopoulos. Brad and Paul spoke about their careers in baseball, including how they got started in the game, what they have experienced and learned throughout their journeys and what led them to be involved with the military. Mr. Ziegler created Pastime for Patriots to honor service men and women; he was the MLB Bob Feller Act of Valor Award recipient in 2016. Mr. Kostacopoulos is the second-winningest head coach in Naval Academy baseball history. The Navy baseball program has earned five-straight Patriot League regular season titles under his guidance. The group discusses Mr. Ziegler’s upbringing around baseball and his resilience that led him to the major leagues. After being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, Mr. Ziegler pitched for the Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Miami Marlins. Mr. Ziegler was the Major League Baseball recipient of the 2016 Bob Feller Act of Valor Award for his regular support of his community, specifically veterans, through his foundation Pastime for Patriots. Bob serves on the Act of Valor Foundation Board of Directors, where his experience and connections within the baseball industry are invaluable to the Foundation. Mr. DiBiasio is the host of the popular “Indians Alumni Round-table Show” on SportsTime Ohio, as well as “Tribe Tales,” a where-are-they-now segment that airs pre-game every Sunday on the Indians Radio Network. The group discusses Bob’s personal friendship with Bob Feller, his 30 plus year career in Major League Baseball, including currently serving as the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for the Cleveland Indians, as well as Mr. DiBiasio’s lifelong commitment to his community.

The 17 year old Bob Feller’s first official major league appearance came on July 19th in the eighth inning of a game against the Washington Senators in Griffith Stadium that the Indians were losing 9-2. Feller plunked the first batter, Red Kress, in the ribs with a wild curveball. Then, throwing only fastballs, Feller retired the side around two walks on a strikeout and two popups to end his one inning of work.

The Wounded Warrior Project honors and empowers wounded warriors. Tunnel To Towers honors military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.
